(500) Days of Summer

I rented this movie and watched it with my family the other night. Admittedly, I rented it as a second choice — Where The Wild Things Are had just been released as well, but was all checked out. So, (500) Days of Summer seemed like the next best thing for one of those lazy family gatherings where you just need a movie to put on that most people probably haven’t seen.

The movie works. It may not be a hard buy, at least not for my collection, but perhaps for friend who likes quirky, cutesy humor might appreciate it as a gift. The format and writing is clever, the acting decent, but there is some power lacking from the purposefully understated performances of the lead characters, played by Zooey Deschanel, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. They did lose my attention a few times, but for the style of writing, it still worked.

This movie leaves a proper sense of completion, much ado to the intentionally expiration-prone setting constructed around a 500 day “love” affair, which is more than can be said for much of the garbage being hocked to the masses now-a-days. (500) Days of Summer leaves a decently cathartic feeling, reminding us to keep our minds open… or our options open, or both I guess. Or maybe that there is a big world out there, and we shouldn’t give up because the first thing we tried didn’t work out… and that there are plenty of fish in the sea. That sort of thing.

Anyway, who doesn’t like that?
